Self control affects trust

Research by Francesca Righetti and Catrin Finkenauer shows that the level of self-control one perceives others to have, influences the level of trust: the higher the level of self-control we see in each other, the more we trust each other.

Finkenauer and Righetti used four experiments to examine the link between perceived self-control and trust.  In these experiments they included couples, as well as people who didn’t know each other.  In addition to trust, which has been well-established as a key factor in relationships, this research suggests that perceived level of self-control appears to be a fundamental ingredient for relationships.
