Professional interests

Jaap Oosterlaan (1962) is full professor in Pediatric Neuropsychology at the VU University Amsterdam. He has been investigating neurocognitive dysfunctions in children for the past 20 years and has published more than 100 international peer-reviewed papers, which have been cited more than 2500 times during the past 10 years.
His research has concentrated on neurocognitive deficits in diverse childhood conditions. One line of research focuses on childhood disruptive behavior disorders and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in particular. The other line of research targets medical conditions affecting the central nervous system, such as premature birth.
The study of neurocognitive functions provides an often overlooked and understudied window of investigation. Neurocognitive functions have been proven valuable tools to aid diagnosis and chart outcome . Because neurocognitive deficits are closer to the genotype than behavioral manifestations, neurocognitive deficits provide powerful tools for elucidating etiology. For example, neurocognitive deficits can be used to detect new vulnerability genes for a disorder . Neurocognitive deficits may also be used to elucidate the underlying mechanism of dysfunction: Neurocognitive deficits often act as powerful predictors for behavioral and academic performance . Finally the neurocognitive focus has contributed to the development of treatment approaches . For instance, neurofeedback has shown a promising technique to combat attentional difficulties in children treated for brain tumors as well as in ADHD.
The focus is on a broad array of neurocognitive functions varying from basic motor skills to higher order cognitive control processes. The research programme has a strong reputation with regard to the development of sophisticated computer based paradigms. These paradigms are coupled with the use of psychophysiological measures and imaging techniques including high density EEG and MRI-based techniques including functional MRI and diffusion tensor imaging.
Currently one assistant professor, one post-doc, and nine PhD students work on these two lines of research. Under the supervision of Oosterlaan, nine doctoral students have been awarded their PhD over the last few years. Oosterlaan holds clinical qualifications (Health Psychologist) and has set-up several university affiliated outpatient clinics specialized in the assessment and treatment of ADHD.
His teaching focuses on pediatric neuropsychology, assessment and research skills. Professor Oosterlaan holds several positions in boards. He is chairman of the Permanent Science Committee of the Faculty of Psychology and Education of the VU University Amsterdam.
