William James Graduate School receives NWO Funding
The William James Graduate School will receive a funding of 800,000 euro’s as part of the NWO Graduate Programme.
This is how the evaluation committee of NWO described the William James Graduate School:
“The scientific level of the programme and the researchers involved is high to very high. The quality and design of the teaching programmes are of the highest level.”
With this funding from the NWO Graduate Programme, aimed at encouraging the development of Dutch PhD courses, the William James Graduate School can offer 4 PhD-students from the 2-year research masters a position. In this way NWO supports the ambition of the William James Graduate School and VU University to stimulate young top talent.

New Programme started in September 2011
Starting September 2011 the Faculty of Psychology and Education offers a new programme: a Research master's in Clinical and Developmental Psychopathology. This programme is organized by three departments: Clinical Psychology, Developmental Psychology and Special Education.

Where do our alumni go?
Alumni Research Master’s in Social Psychology:
From the 52 students who graduated over the last 5 years from this programme, 25 (almost 50%) are now working on a PhD in a university. Of those, 8 are still at VU University Amsterdam, the others are mostly at other universities in the Netherlands, but two of them are abroad (in the UK and USA).
From the students not going for a PhD, 5 are working as researcher in another setting (for TNO, the Police, the Bulgarian government), two are working in HR advisory positions, and 3 of them have chosen to do yet another Master.
Alumni Research Master’s in Cognitive Neuropsychology:
From the 21 students who graduated over the last two years, 13 are working as PhD students. Of those, 5 are working at VU University, 4 students are Germany and the other four at other Dutch universities. From the remaining students, 1 has a research position in the US, the others are currently looking for positions.
First alumni receive their PhD!
We are proud to announce that the first alumni of the Research master's in Social Psychology received their PhD in the last weeks. On November 11 Katarzyna Kubacka succesfully defended her thesis at VU University, and a couple of days later Hans IJzerman did the same at Utrecht University. Congratulations to them both!
FPP Faculty Colloquia Series organized
Since the academic year 2009-10, a series of faculty colloquia is organized monthly, each time by a different department from our Faculty of Psychology and Education. All FPP colleagues and students are invited to attend these colloquia and to join in in the discussion afterwards, while having a drink.
The first colloquium for 2011-12 is:
- October 6: Prof. dr. Alan Fiske, Univeristy of California, Los Angeles: "Metarelational Models for Combining Social Relationships" location room A-301 (MF), time 4 pm.
