Who is the Master’s for?
We are looking for students who are motivated, committed and have potential for growth. They should have a genuine interest in empirical research in the field of social psychology. 
 
Admissions
To gain admission to this programme, you must meet a number of criteria.

  • You hold an academic bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Psychology or a related discipline, preferably with an emphasis on social psychology, biological psychology, cognitive psychology, economics, neurosciences or cognitive sciences and a focus on methodology, statistics and research. Applications from students with a background in other disciplines will be considered, but these candidates must have completed courses in statistics and methodology and have experience of conducting and reporting on experimental research. Prospective students in this category are strongly advised seek a preliminary advice before proceeding with their application (see below).
  • You have achieved good grades: an average of 7.5 or above (“B” or GPA >3.3).
  • A satisfactory result in the entrance assignment (see below).

  • The Admissions Board will take into account recommendations from universities and other relevant information.

All applications are carefully considered on their individual merits by the Admissions Board. This is made up of members of the academic staff and chaired by the Head of the Department of Social Psychology. As well the formal prerequisites listed above and other information relevant to academic achievement, they look for motivation, commitment and potential.

Soon after we have received your request for admission you will be sent the selection assignment.  You will have two weeks to complete the assignment and return it to us.  The Admissions committee will then evaluate your assignment, as well as the information you provided with your request of admission.  You will be notified of the result in two weeks time, and we also notify the central student administration, so they can update your status in Studylink

Preliminary advice
If you would like to receive preliminary advice on your chances of being admitted to this programme, please send us your CV, a list of the higher education courses you have taken and the grades obtained. We need to receive these at least a month in advance of your application deadline. E-mail them to: socialpsychology@psy.vu.nl  
  

Selection assignment
Satisfactory completion of the selection assignment is an essential part of the application procedure. This involves the study of an empirical scientific article and the discussion of research ideas related to it.
