As director of the William James Graduate School I am very happy to welcome you to our website.  The graduate school is part of the faculty of Psychology and Education of VU University Amsterdam, and is therefore embedded in an excellent academic environment. We have truly outstanding researchers, who are also dedicated teachers and enjoy working together with students. We offer students a real community of learners, where students participate in high quality research, such as the longitudinal study among newlywed couples, to see how relationship partners make judgments about each other (with Dr. Finkenauer), or the study on neurocognitive dysfunctions of children with impulse control disorders (with Prof. Oosterlaan).  Students will also be invited to attend colloquia, where scientists from all over the world will talk about their current research. Take a look at the challenging Master programmes we have on offer, and see if we can help you make yourself the best you can be!

programme director research master Cognitive Neuropsychology

The research master Cognitive Neuropsychology is the product of a close cooperation between the department of Cognitive Psychology and the department Clinical Neuropsychology. It is really an exciting research master as its program is a combination of more fundamental courses on e.g. attention and memory and clinical courses in which the focus is on patients (children, adults, elderly) with brain disorders and the effects of these brain disorders on the various cognitive and behavioural processes. The lectures are given by nationally and internationally highly acknowledged researchers who present their data and explain their theories with great enthusiasm. Importantly, the staff is eager to work with the students in various research projects. This research master is most challenging for those who experience a profound interest in the brain, its normal functioning and its vulnerability for various disorders. We invite our students to join us in this great adventure!

programme director research master Social Psychology

The Research Master Social Psychology is the only Research Master (in the world, as far as we know) with an exclusive focus on social psychology, a field that that is rich in terms of theoretical knowledge and insights and is essential to understanding important societal phenomena such as health, environmental issues, and social relations.  The program is also unique because the staff is excellent and dedicated (and includes top scientists from abroad), the students come from various countries around the world, and the research facilities are cutting-edge. These are the ingredients to an enjoyable and stimulating environment as well as to the overall success of the program. Past students who completed the program literally talk about “having the time of their life” by which they not just mean “a good, enjoyable time”. They also refer to personal growth, in part because of the international nature and breadth of the program, and professional development in terms of knowledge and academic skill. And this is recognized by others.  Virtually all students have found their way in key research positions at the university and research institutes, typically even before they have graduated. Take a close look at the courses of the Research Master Social Psychology, and realize that the program is a truly exciting and exceptional investment in your future – and perhaps that of social psychology as well!
