Jan Berend Deijen received his MSc in Physiological Psychology in 1979 and his MSc in Clinical Psychology in 1981 from the VU University Amsterdam. From 1979 until 1985 he was employed at the departments of Physiological Psychology and Clinical Psychology of the VU University. In addition he was school psychologist at a school for mentally disabled children. From 1985 until 1999 he was full-time researcher at the department of Physiological Psychology. His research activities were in the field of human psychopharmacology inclusive research on the relationship between nutrients and behavior. He performed psychopharmacological studies for the pharmaceutical industry and for the Dutch government studies on the neuropsychological implications of aeroplane noise and the introduction of the euro in The Netherlands.
In 1993 he completed his PhD thesis at the same university. His thesis dealt with effects of vitamins in age-related cognitive decline. In 1999 he became assistant professor at the Department of Clinical Neuropsychology of the VU University. Since 2003 he is associate professor at this department working and teaching in the field of psychopharmacology and research methods. He is involved in studies on the diagnostic potential of neuropsychological indices in Parkinson’s disease and on the relationship between the growth hormone/IGF-I axis and neuropsychological functions in collaboration with the VU University Medical Center.
