Pim Cuijpers is professor of Clinical Psychology at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and head of the Department of Clinical Psychology. He is also vice-director of the EMGO Institute of Health and Care Research of the VU University and the VU University Medical Center.
The aim of the Research Programme of the Department of Clinical Psychology is to generate knowledge on the development of mental disorders and psychological treatment of mental disorders. Based on the theoretical view of the stress-vulnerability hypothesis, we investigate the psychological processes that contribute to the development of mental disorders, and how these processes can be influenced by psychological interventions. We focus on the processes and effects of psychological interventions and effective ingredients of these interventions. We typically use experimental research and randomised controlled trials in our studies. Within this research theme, we currently focus on prevention and early intervention in common mental disorders. One important line of research is on internet-based interventions for common mental disorders and the use of these treatments in stepped-care models. The research of the Department of Clinical Psychology is embedded in the EMGO Institute of Health and Care Research.
Pim Cuijpers has published about 350 peer reviewed papers, chapters, reports and professional publications on the epidemiology, etiology, prevention and (early) treatment of depression, and on guided self-help for depression. He is also involved in a series of meta-analytic studies on psychotherapy for adult depression (www.evidencebasedpsychotherapies.org).
